The aim of this LMS Joint Research Group Grant, Scheme 3, Analysis, Geometry and Stochastics for Planet Earth is to investigate current challenges in mechanics, dynamics and earth system which require an intricate integration of techniques from geometry, analysis and stochastic processes.
This is the fourth and final meeting in the series. The first and third meeting was held at Imperial college, the second meeting took place in Reading (details on the website of the meeting).
The forthcoming meeting will consider questions of existence and regularity of solutions for semi-geostrophic equations, which are relevant approximation to the GFD for the large scale dynamics in weather and climate systems. Furthermore, aspects of fluctuations and related large deviation principles and extreme events will be discussed. Filtering and Data Assimilation methods are a way to overcome the aforementioned irregularities and instabilities and will be also part of the workshop.

Researchers interested to participate are warmly welcome. The conference fee is £ 20 and £ 10 for PostDoc/Phd. The fee will be collected at the venue. Limited support for PhD-students and PostDocs are available. Please contact the organisers at t.kuna@reading.ac.uk for details.

Programme:

10:30-11:15 Prof Freddy Bouchet (ENS de Lyon, Laboratoire de Physique) on “Averaging and large deviation theory for stochastic partial differential equations and applications to abrupt transitions for turbulent atmosphere jets”

11:15-12:00 Prof Dan Crisan (Imperial College London) on “Particle filters in High Dimensions”

12:00-13:15 Lunchbreak

13:15-14:00 Prof Beatrice Pelloni (University of Reading) on “The semi-geostrophic equations: a survey of analytical tools and results”
