Royal Meteorological Society hosted on Wednesday 14 December 2016 an event on “Chaos and Confidence in Weather Forecasting”. Chaos leads to uncertainty in weather forecasts which grows the further into the future we try to predict. This meeting aimed to discuss how chaos is taken into account in order to assign confidence levels (and probabilities) to weather forecasts. The event discussed how such “probabilistic” forecasts are assessed, and how they can be used by industry and the public. The MPE CDT students had a large presence at the meeting.
Congratulations to Carlo Cafaro and Ioannis Katharopoulos for winning the runners up prize at the competition at the event. The competition was on portraying confidence and uncertainty to the users of weather forecasts. The competition entries were judged by a panel of experts including BBC Weather Presenter, John Hammond.
