November visit to Weather German Service (DWD) in Offenbach, Germany

On 2nd – 3rd November 2017, Professor Dan Crisan and the MPE student Oana Lang visited the Weather German Service (DWD) in Offenbach, Germany, at the invitation of Professor Roland Potthast, the Head of the Data Assimilation division at DWD. The aim of the visit was twofold.
Firstly, major progress has been achieved on the collaborative project Data Assimilation for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations. This project focuses on the development and implementation of a new stochastic data assimilation model using observations of the wind velocity and pressure over specific areas on Earth.

Secondly, the visit has been a wonderful opportunity for discussing innovative ideas and establishing new collaborations. On Friday 3rd Prof Crisan gave a talk on Principled Data Assimilation – A Dream or Reality? which has received strong interest from the Data Assimilation division as well as from the external audience.

Consequently, there were fruitful discussions on the bridges between theoretical and operational data assimilation models, difficulties when implementing particle filters, current and future challenges and solutions.

We would like to thank Professor Roland Potthast for his invitation and hospitality.
